Specifically it is ideally used to create pilot holes in vertebrae during spinal surgeries. It can be used in bone grafting procedures where the bone needs to be prodded to assess its condition. This awl features a large teardrop shaped handle that makes it easy to handle manually and maintain a firm grip to increase accuracy.
